Love Your Neighbour | Act4You Love Your Neighbour is based in Kenya and is one of our Act4You projects run by Ruth and Lox Busisa. Ruth tells us more about their amazing project:Showing love to the last, least and lost in Kenya ‘Love Your Neighbour’ has been an adventure with Jesus. I am a Welsh girl called Ruth and I’m married to a Kenyan called Lox. We live in Wales and together we work in Kenya to show Jesus’ love to the last, least and the lost. We began Love Your Neighbour in 2012 when our hearts were moved by kids in Kibera slum who longed to go to school but couldn’t afford to. We took them in to teach them ABCs and 123s and, before we knew it, we had a room full of kids eager to learn and play. We bought a room in Kibera slum and turned it into a Pre-school and, as the kids approached Primary School age, we were able to get sponsors for them to continue with their learning - and so Little Angel’s sponsorship programme began. The Busisa's on their latest trip to Kenya - Ruth, Roxy, Lox and Joseia As time went on, our hearts were moved once again, this time for those living near the coast of Kenya, and God opened a door for us to buy land in Kilifi County. We came to realise that, despite the fact that those who live right next to the coast often prosper, those who live a little inland are amongst the poorest in Kenya. In these areas the rates of teenage pregnancy are amongst the highest in Kenya; unemployment is high; the risk of drought and famine is high; the number of people with disabilities is higher than usual, and yet the rate of education and support in the area is low.In 2018 we went to Kilifi with a team of young people from Wales, and we built a community centre there with the aim of giving every family in the area an opportunity to live a life free of poverty. We launched the centre in 2019 and, since then, our team there have been working across the community to share Jesus’ love in practical ways. We give sanitary towels to schoolgirls to help keep them in school. We empower women through training them in tailoring and business skills. We equip people with disabilities with mobility aids and make it easier for them to be a part of their community. We give water and goats to families in need, to help get them through times of difficulty. We run kids’ and youth programmes to build the faith of the next generation and to show them how to live for Jesus.Ruth with sanitary towels ready to give to school girls We don’t use a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach, instead we try to stop for individuals as we so often saw Jesus doing in the Gospels. One individual we felt God wanted us to stop for recently was a teenager named Javis. Javis was born disabled and, because of this, his father sent him away along with his mother and siblings. Since then, they have struggled to get by, living in a broken-down hut on their uncle’s land and, because he has a physical disability, Javis has not been given the opportunity to go to school. When our team first met him, they were struck by how hard-working and intelligent he was despite his circumstance. Straight away we were able to bless Javis with a wheelchair and, since meeting him, we’ve been able to build him a new house, get him into school and build ramps and wheelchair-accessible toilets in the local school and at our Community Centre so that Javis, and hopefully others with disabilities, can go to school. The whole village has been talking about all the work that has been done so that just one child can go to school and, to us, this demonstrates something of the heart of God which we are trying to show to our neighbours in Kenya.
